The short version

Who we are

Daily Diary Log is a personal diary app for your hobbies and everyday life. It's run by John Wright in Queensland, Australia ("we", "us").

This page explains, in plain English, what we collect, why, where it's kept and what choices you have. For any privacy question, email john51wright@gmail.com.

What we collect

To sign you in

  • Your email address. We send you a sign-in link. There's no password.
  • If you choose "Continue with Google": your name, email address and profile picture link, as Google provides them. We use only the name and email.
  • Your display name, if you add one. It's used for your greeting.

Your diary (the things you add)

  • Entries: the words, the date (including "unknown" or approximate dates) and upcoming events.
  • How you organise them: the categories and interests you choose, any interests you create yourself, and your own tags.
  • Photos you add, plus a "fingerprint" of each photo. The fingerprint is a short code worked out from the photo. It's used only to warn you when you add the same photo twice.
  • Messages you send us from the "Ideas or problems?" box on About Me. They are saved with your account, and a copy is emailed to us, so we can reply.
  • Settings, such as larger text.

Kept on your phone or computer only

  • Unsaved drafts, so an entry isn't lost if the signal drops.
  • Your sign-in, so you stay signed in.

These stay on your device and aren't sent to us until you save.

What we don't collect

  • No location tracking.
  • No contacts.
  • No advertising or analytics trackers.
  • No voice recordings. When you use the microphone, your phone or browser turns your speech into text. Some browsers, such as Chrome, do this using their maker's service (for example Google). We receive only the finished text, never the sound.

How we use it

We use your information only to run Daily Diary Log for you:

  • signing you in
  • saving and showing your diary
  • sorting and searching your entries
  • the duplicate photo check
  • reading and replying to your messages and ideas

We don't use your diary for advertising, and we don't use it to train AI.

Who can see it

  • You. The app's security rules only ever let a signed-in person see their own entries, photos, interests and tags.
  • Other users can't. No other user can see or search your diary.
  • Us, only when needed. As the people running the service, we have technical access to the database, as any app operator does. We look at a person's diary only when you ask us to help with a problem, or where the law requires it. We never browse diaries.

Companies that help us run the app

They store or deliver data for us, and don't use your information for their own purposes.

Supabase
Our database, photo storage and sign-in emails. Hosted in Sydney, Australia.
FlutterFlow
Builds and hosts the app's web pages. It doesn't hold your diary.
Google
Only if you choose "Continue with Google" to sign in.
Netlify
Hosts this website. If you test the app and fill in our tester form, your answers are kept there for us.
Resend
Emails us a copy when you send a message from the app, with your email address so we can reply.

We don't sell or rent your information to anyone.

About photos

Each photo is kept at its own long, random web address that can't be guessed. That's how the app shows it to you. Photos aren't listed or searchable, and other users can't browse them.

However, anyone you gave a photo's exact address to could open it, so please don't share those addresses.

Where it's kept, and how it's kept safe

  • Stored in Sydney, Australia, with Supabase.
  • Scrambled (encrypted) while it travels between your device and our servers, and while it's stored.
  • Protected by security rules that let each person reach only their own diary.
  • No passwords. You sign in with an email link or Google, so there's no password of yours for anyone to steal from us.

How long we keep it

  • For as long as you have an account.
  • When you delete your account, your entries, photos, interests, tags and profile are removed straight away. Our automatic daily backups roll over within 7 days, after which no copy remains.
  • Unfinished sign-ups: if a sign-in link is never used, the unconfirmed account is removed automatically after 7 days.
